What Makes a Mobile App Succeed After Launch

The mobile apps that fail rarely fail because of a bug. They fail because nobody was watching what happened after the download, and by the time anyone noticed users had stopped opening the app, the problem was already three months old.

Retention Tells the Story Downloads Hide

An app that gets ten thousand downloads and loses ninety percent of those users within a week has a fundamentally different problem than one gaining downloads slowly but keeping most of the users it gets. Tracking day-1, day-7 and day-30 retention from the first week of launch, not after a quarterly review, is what catches a churn problem while it is still fixable.

Monitor Before Users Complain

Crash reporting and performance monitoring need to be live before launch, not added once users start complaining. A crash that only affects one older Android device model is invisible in a demo and very visible to the exact segment of real users running that device, and the gap between those two realities is where trust gets lost fastest.

Notifications Are a Scarce Resource

Push notifications and re-engagement need restraint as much as they need presence. Apps that message users constantly train them to ignore or disable notifications entirely, at which point the channel is gone for the messages that actually matter. The apps that hold onto users treat notifications as a scarce resource, not a default marketing channel.
